Gary recently served as the keynote speaker at the National Black Caucus of State Legislators (NBCSL) 33rd Annual Legislative Conference in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Gary honored the work and legacy of the NBCSL during his remarks at the Humanitarian Awards and Opening Breakfast, where he addressed over 300 African American state legislators hailing from over 42 states, the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands. Gary’s voice echoed throughout the room as he praised the group of African American state legislators for the good that they do for all Americans both individually and collectively. He commended them for their dedication to undertake the difficult issues that directly impact federal and state policy. Gary also took a moment to challenge those assembled in the room. He challenged the attendees to continue the pursuit for justice and equality and to reach back and help those who are underprivileged. The program concluded with the presentation of the Humanitarian of the Year award to Representative Lois DeBerry from Tennessee. “Thanks to the vision and work of the National Black Caucus of State Legislators, all Americans have been afforded opportunities that we otherwise may not have been fortunate enough to receive during our lifetime,” commented Gary. “While I am pleased that we have made substantial strides; I am also reminded of the fact that we have a long way to go. It is up to us to embrace the challenge!” continued Gary.
